Level counting answers which floor has room; per-space detection answers which space. Counting solves drivers circling a full deck at a fraction of the cost. Per-space detection is needed when a deck has room but drivers cannot see it. Most garages end up mixed.

Can a parking guidance system be retrofitted?

Yes. Retrofits are mostly a question of pathway for conduit. Camera-based heads cover several bays at once and reduce penetrations, which is often what makes a retrofit viable.

Usually yes. Occupancy counts and plate reads are the two feeds most PARCS platforms accept, including systems installed by another vendor.

Counting systems drift because every missed vehicle is permanent until corrected, so they are recalibrated on a schedule against a known state. Per-space systems do not drift the same way because each bay reports its own state.

Which parking guidance system is best: counting, ultrasonic or camera?

There is no single best sensor; there is a best sensor for a given deck. Level counting answers which floor has room and costs least per bay. Ultrasonic answers which space is open and does not drift, but needs a device per bay. Camera detection covers roughly six bays per head and adds plate reads, dwell data and misuse alerts, but needs adequate light or infrared. Most garages over about 400 bays end up mixed: counting on commuter levels, per-space detection where visitors park.

How long does parking equipment last?

Service life is driven by duty cycle, environment and maintenance rather than by age. Most parking hardware carries a twelve-month warranty, which describes manufacturer risk rather than expected life. Barrier gate operators wear at the motor, gearbox and arm spring; ultrasonic sensors at the transducer face and, on wireless units, the battery; LPR cameras show a falling night-time match rate before daytime accuracy drops; pay stations fail at the card reader, printer and bill validator. Nearly every one of these has an early symptom visible in data before a driver is affected.

What should I ask a parking guidance vendor?

Accepted Answer

Ask what happens when a sensor fails, because a bay must report unknown rather than open. Ask who owns the occupancy and plate data, how the system recalibrates, what the real field failure rate is from the vendor own service records, whether it integrates with your existing access and revenue control system, who performs service and how quickly, and what year six looks like for parts availability and partial refresh.
