Guidance in a hospital garage
What changes when patients and visitors can see where to park before they're already late for an appointment.
The situation
Hospital garages carry a traffic mix no other site has: staff arriving on shift patterns, patients arriving at appointment times they cannot move, and visitors who have never been in the building before. When a visitor circles for eight minutes, the cost isn't inconvenience — it's a missed appointment slot and a clinic running behind.
What was installed
- Per-space detection on visitor and patient levels
- Level counting on staff decks, where drivers already know the building
- Entrance signage showing availability before the driver commits to the ramp
- Accessible-bay monitoring with misuse alerting
What changed
Visitors stopped arriving at reception already frustrated. Staff decks kept their simple level counts, so the spend went where the confusion actually was. Accessible bays became visible from the aisle rather than found by chance, and misuse could be addressed the same day instead of after a complaint.
